Tips For Knowing Disabled People

Hi guys,

I have some things to say. If you’re unaware I have Cerebral Palsy, and I’ve now had it for 19 years. I’ve noticed in my short time on this earth, I have noticed that often people do not know how to treat disabled people, or what to do. Disclaimer: I fully understand that a lot of people are just not aware – this is by no means an attack on anyone

  1. This is THE most important thing, you ready? They are people!

Okay, so I am fully aware how obvious that sounds. However, here’s the thing, often people treat disabled people like aliens. We are normal, we want all the same things you do. We want love acceptance, to live and so much more. Just because we are disabled, that does not mean we don’t have a working brain, we think, laugh and can joke. Therefore, I ask Treat us like you would anyone, no special treatment, just love us.

2. A lot of disabled people believe that they are burdens.

As sad as this is, I know many who have felt like their disabilities make them a burden on others. If someone you know (or meet) feels this way, it’ll take a lot for them to believe they are not burden. The best thing to do is to show them, that they are not, be willing to help them in what they need. Tell them that they are not a burden, and please please be patient.

3. Just because they are disabled, it does not mean that they are not able.

Often disabled people are seen as though they can’t do anything, or lead a normal life. Here’s the thing, they can!! Some things may need to be adapted, but if anything that just makes us stronger!  We can still get married, have children, have a successful career and live a full life!

4. Believe in us

Okay, so this one is not exclusive to disabled people, this is really just people. However, a large portion of us believe they cannot live a normal life. Please believe in us, for when we do not believe in ourselves. Remind us that we can do anything, despite the struggles!

5. We are NOT broken

Something in us doesn’t work, that does not mean that we are broken or not good enough. t means we get a wonderful opportunity to see the world in a unique, magical way. Please remember that we are whole, and survivors. Please treat us as such, just as you would like it!

A MESSAGE FOR MY WONDERFUL READERS THAT ARE DISABLED!

This is extremely important so please listen up!

  1. YOU ARE IMPORTANT
  2. YOU ARE LOVED
  3. YOU ARE NOT A BURDEN
  4. YOU ARE WHOLE
  5. YOU ARE 100% GOOD ENOUGH
  6. YOU ARE AMAZING
  7. YOU ARE SURVIVORS
  8. YOU CAN BEAT THIS WORLD
  9. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO.
  10.  YOU ARE AMAZING, TRUST IN YOURSELF!

So that is actually a message for ANYONE. I truly mean it.
